Position: Agricultural Literacy Coordinator

Responsible to: Farm Bureau Manager

Description: Part-time (under 1000 hours per year) hourly position working for the McHenry County Farm Bureau, creating an awareness of the value, the vastness, and the diversity of the agricultural industry of McHenry County and Illinois. Conducting Ag in the Classroom programs, teacher workshops, Ag Expo, and a Summer Agriculture Institute. Also provides materials, information and assistance to teachers and students. Assists the Farm Bureau Foundation with two to three fundraisers per year.

Requirements:

•              Degree in education, public relations, or agriculture related field.

•              Understands agricultural concepts, from agriculture background, or has the ability and willingness to learn.

•              Understands and has experience with public education in Illinois.

•              Communicates well in writing and in presentations.

•              Meeting and conference coordination experience.

•              Budget management.

•              Transportation and a valid driver’s license.

•              Must be able to lift 25-50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

•              Master’s degree in education, public relations, or related areas.

•              Two or more years of teaching experience

•              Bilingual

Compensation: Salary: based on experience. Mileage reimbursed at IRS rate.

Administrative and program support is provided to the coordinator.

McHenry County Agriculture Literacy Coordinator

Job Description

  • Schedule and conduct education programs on agriculture literacy in the schools in McHenry County. This will also include agriculture presentations to classrooms and assisting teachers with agriculture lesson plans and resources.

 

  • Participate and make presentations to teachers at institutes and workshops with public and private schools to promote agricultural education.

 

  • Work with the Farm Bureau staff and volunteers in scheduling programs, meetings and activities. Help schedule and coordinate the every other year event AG EXPO.

 

  • Recruit, train, coordinate and collaborate with volunteers to provide development of curriculum materials and classroom presentations.

 

  • Promote and coordinate Summer Ag Institute (2-hour graduate course for teachers).

 

  • Develop rapport with teachers, staff, superintendents and the regional superintendent via newsletters and personal visits.  Develop a rapport and relationship with the Ag Literacy program’s volunteers and donors.

 

  • Create an awareness of agriculture career opportunities through counselors, teachers, and students.

 

  • Assist teachers and volunteers with setting up farm tours, field trips, and other related classroom special activities and providing related curriculum materials.

 

  • Work with social and local media to cover and promote Ag in the Classroom programs and events.

 

  • Attend State Ag Literacy meetings and prepare requested reports.

 

  • Work with volunteers and staff on two to three fundraising events each year.
