Discount Program Expanding

McHenry County Farm Bureau welcomes three more businesses to our local discount program. Woodstock Ornamental Werks is offering members a discount on custom fabrications including handrails, balconies, driveway gates and fencing. A Better Water Treatment Co. of McHenry is offering members a discount on water treatment equipment purchases. Monarch Renewable Energy of Elgin is offering members a $500 discount off wind turbines and the initial site survey is free. To learn more about these discounts and others click here.

MCFB helps those in need

McHenry County Farm Bureau has been a long time supporter of McHenry County Fair's 4-H and FFA livestock auction. This past year, we purchased a market steer from a young man involved in 4-H. Following the purchase, we sent the animal to market and received one thousand dollars.

Ag. Plate available

The specialty license plate that salutes agriculture is now available. It can be ordered through the Secretary of State's (SOS) office or at a local driver's license facility. The plate is available for cars, pick-up trucks, vans, and SUVs.

There's an additional fee associated with the purchase of a specialty plate, and for every ag specialty plate sold, $25 of the fee goes to the Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom program (IAITC).

Annual Plow Day held

Von Bergen's Country Market held their 11th Annual Plow Day and Antique Tractor Show in late September. The event included special guest Max Armstrong, WGN Radio, and his antique tractors. McHenry County Farm Bureau and the Von Bergen's County Market co-sponsored a tractor parade through MCCD's conservation trail to Hebron. Families enjoyed the petting zoo, face painting, a children's pedal pull and wagon rides. Other exhibitors included the Northeast Cattlemen's Association, Hebron Boy Scouts, The Field Museum and McHenry County Historical Society.

Larry Reinhard, Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, provided youth and adults with fun activities relating to corn and soybeans. Our Women's Committee assisted our Ag in the Classroom program by handing out Ag. Facts Fortune Cookies, Ag Mags and agricultural coloring books. To view pictures click here.

Call it H1N1

Call it H1N1, not "swine flu." You cannot get H1N1 from eating pork and the misnomer is hurting pork producers financially.  The pork industry is taking a beating from public reaction to the H1N1 outbreak and some inaccurate media coverage linking the human illness to pigs. Nick Giordano with the National Pork Producers Council international trade division says the hog industry is losing at least $2.5 Million a day, about $5.50 a head.

Can people catch H1N1 from eating pork?
No. H1N1 influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get H1N1 influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160F kills the H1N1 virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

How does H1N1 spread?
Human-to-human transmission of H1N1 can occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
