Leaders to Washington

In mid-September, 17 members of the Illinois Farm Bureau®, along with several IFB staff members, traveled to Washington, DC, where they met with members of Illinois' Congressional delegation to discuss issues important to farmers and to ask for their support on upcoming legislation. Audrey Davis, McHenry County Farm Bureau Board Member and Women's Committee Representative, was among those who traveled to Washington from September 14-16, 2010, as part of IFB's Leaders to Washington program.

Harvest season is here, take caution

An early planting season combined with good seasonal weather is allowing area farmers to start their corn harvest two to three weeks earlier than normal. This means that area farmers will be utilizing local, county and state roads to transport their trucks, tractors, combines and wagons throughout the fall.

All of these factors pose concern for the safety of farmers and motorists who will be sharing the roads. Therefore, the McHenry County Farm Bureau would like to share these driving tips with motorists in an attempt to avoid accidents.

Oil Storage Rules For Farms

On-farm fuel storage plans needed by Nov. 10

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized its Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) rule that governs oil and fuel storage for many businesses, including farms.

Tractor Trek 2010

 

McHenry County Farm Bureau and McHenry County Antique Farm Equipment Association co-sponsored their eighth annual "Tractor Trek" on Saturday, July 17.

Over 100 participants had the opportunity to share the day with other antique tractor enthusiast as they traveled through Northern McHenry County to Lake Geneva, Wi. Proceeds raised from this event are donated to the Agriculture in the Classroom program.

A special thank you goes out to the drivers, volunteers, Country Clovers 4-H and our host: Von Bergen's Country Market Hebron, Lake Geneva Convention & Visitors Bureau, Lake Geneva Cruise Lines, Popeye's Restaurant and Mor-Agra Grain of Zenda. We also would like to thank McHenry County Sheriff's Department and Lake Geneva Police Dept for their assistance. Tractor Supply sponsored the afternoon ice-cream break and Conserv FS sponsored the end of the day refueling.

Discovery Center Museum opens new Agriculture Exhibit

The Discovery Center Museum in Rockford Illinois has opened a new exhibit featuring agriculture. The museum is designed for children but is fun for the whole family. The amazing Discovery Center Museum is full of over 250 exciting hands-on exhibits spread over a two-floor area. Out in the museum's backyard, visitors can explore Rock River Discovery Park, a giant, multi-level science park with a hands-on twist. The museum also hosts traveling exhibits, special events and programs throughout the year. Child Magazine ranked it as #4 Children's Museum in the USA.
